Pinaree Sanpitak 1985-2020 celebrates thirty five years of Thailand’s foremost female artist, Pinaree Sanpitak, charting her emergence in the Thai contemporary art scene during its infancy in the 1980s through its entry into the international stage in the 21st century. Spanning more than three decades, the monograph documents a comprehensive body of works — prints, paintings, sculpture, installations, and other media — offering an insightful look at her dedicated artistic journey.
For Pinaree, her “sense of being in the world” provides an intimate stand for her art making with a personal artistic impulse. Those senses expand into a language of her own, one which translates into shared experiences with the viewers. The deep bonds between the works and the audience fuel her progress, pushing the boundaries of her explorations into new material and conceptual possibilities.
With an introduction by Rhana Devenport, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, three leading scholars in the field contributed their essays to this monograph. Gridthiya Gaweewong, Artistic Director of the Jim Thompson Art Center, explores Pinaree’s feminist intent and her roots in the Buddhist tradition — the matriarchal social structure and its symbolic reference — and her ability to infuse them into the international contemporary art exchanges. Curator Roger Nelson of the National Gallery Singapore, illuminates on the symbolism of breast + stupa and its association with the female signs of life. Finally, Vipash Purichanont of the Department of Art History at Silpakorn University approaches her work with a different perspective on Pinaree’s products of the female body that have emerged and multiplied into her various practices.
